Securing Devices for Mobile Computing

Today’s society relies heavily on MCD or mobile computing devices. They use these in schools, the workplace and just about everywhere. Most of these common devices are laptop computers or netbooks, smart phones with processing and storage features, iPads, iPods, and even USB flash drives. We do enjoy the luxury and advantage of using these gadgets but for some reason, there are those who wish to steal our data and even personal information. But, there are precautions to take and things to do to effectively secure our mobile computing devices.

These security tips will protect our mobile computing devices against fraud and any other fraudulent activities. In regards to computers or laptops, make sure that you download and install update patches on a regular basis. In this way, we can avoid being compromised by identity thieves and attackers, or any form of computer virus or malware. There are programs that you can use to have your device updated automatically, or if you are not comfortable with the automatic update, you can have it set to alarm your system when an update is available. A lot of vendors provide a program for notification whenever there is a malware attack or if your system needs to be updated. And always use a secure password to protect your system from any unauthorized use or access. A secure, unique, hard-to-crack password.

A secure password will ensure that no one can access your system unless they have your password. However, this is not a guarantee that you can never be hacked if your system is password protected. There are a lot of trained hackers that can do the trick but if your system is protected, it would take them more time to do their thing until your system detects that there are incoming threats on your system. In some computers, a fingerprint reader can protect your system from being accessed by anyone but you because your own fingerprints are the only key to entry. There are also locking devices that are available for portable computers at low prices.

For your computer programs, make sure that you have installed a personal firewall. It is strongly recommended that you use a personal firewall to make an attacker’s job harder and more time consuming. There are some systems where the firewall is automatically installed, or in some systems, all you need to do is access it once and have it configured on the system’s preference menu. Network attacks are very common nowadays to perpetrate theft. You can avoid this attack if your personal firewall is installed, running, and configured correctly.

When it comes to your internet connection, wired or wireless, it is strongly recommended that the settings for security are set to a maximum level. You can have displayed on your network menu. Though wireless technology endeavors to provide maximum security, it is still best to be sensitive to any incoming wireless signals, unless a back up of a more secured encryption is being used. Encryption is the only way to have your mobile computing devices secured.
